GARDEN BIRDS

CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH A ROBIN

This young robin assisted me while I was gardening by encouraging me to turn more soil for his benefit. He was mostly within arm- or foot-length, and when we got tangled he flew to the edge of the garden rubbish bag. It was there that noticed the intricacy of his feathers, and so I took advantage of a bird’s eye view, so to speak. Click an image twice for a full-scale close-up.

SWALLOWS (ADULT & FLEDGLING) IN DORSET

A few photos taken in July and August of swallows in Dorset. Our recently installed upgraded electricity cables are ridiculously large, but at least they provide a solid perch for the birds. The adult swallows shown are followed by a young trainee swallow nabbing a passing insect; and some cute fledglings including one (penultimate) who decides to call for its food the easy way – and the compliant parent… Swallow, Dorset 6Swallow, Dorset 9Swallow, Dorset 13Swallow, Dorset 2Swallow, Dorset 1Swallow, Dorset 10Swallow, Dorset 11Swallow, Dorset 12Swallow, Dorset 16Swallow, Dorset 15Swallow, Dorset 17

GOLDFINCHES EMBRACE MODERN TECHNOLOGY

THE FIRST SWALLOW OF SUMMER and other birds

THE FIRST SWALLOW TO ARRIVE AT OUR HOUSE IN DORSET, APRIL 27 A handful of swallows arrived from Africa on the first day of sunshine for weeks, preened for a while on the wires, then flew round the garden after insects. The next two days have been heavy rain, and they haven’t shown again… We saw the last ones leave last Autumn, so it’s good to have seen them come back

BLACKBIRD’S NEST

The chicks fledged and flew during the past week, and we missed it… suddenly the nest was empty

HOUSEMARTINS – CWMDU, POWYS, WALES

These little birds moved too fast and too acrobatically for the small camera I had with me. They were nesting under the eaves of the cottage I was staying in
